teams have competed with an astounding fervor - often opposing the teams of much larger high schools - leading to many league championships. Saint Columbkille High School has a recent tradition that offers students involvement in the operation of the high school. The establishment of the Student Council, elected by the student body, encourages the participation of everyone in the affairs of the school. Saint Columbkille's has a tradition of a very active school alumni. In the 1930's, the grammar school graduates gathered every two years, with more than 800 members of the Alumni Association filling the School Hall and the Institute Hall for banquet activities. Fr. Tracy was very proud indeed of the new addition that would house the High School in his remarks, as reported, to the second reunion: "Fr. Tracy, after receiving a wild demonstration, thanked the entire body for their cooperation in making this second annual banquet such a great success. He also spoke of the new addition to the school hall and lauded the support given him by his parishioners. He recalled the priests who have had charge of the school since he came to the parish. The mention of the names of Rev. William Reardon, Rev. Charles White, and Fr. Desmond all brought more applause. With his blessing on the members of the Association and the expressed desire to see them gathered again in two years, Fr. Tracy closed his address." It is this tradition of alumni participation - in accordance with the wishes of Rev. Tracy - that we celebrate with the 50th Anniversary of Saint Columbkille's High School. It is the achievements of the thousands of graduates that we recognize at this time. From the "novel broadcast" of 1934 to the development of computers in the school curriculum in 1984, Saint Col's has grown with the times and stands as a Brighton landmark of academic accomplishments and spirit. For many, Saint Columbkille High School represents a sense of personal achievement, a source of moral reflection, and happy memories. Brian McLaughlin Class of 1973 |
